Mining into a gem of a game

Now, Minecraft has earned itself a lot of negativity since Microsoft took over, but I can honestly say that it really doesn't deserve it, sure some of the changes and additions are questionable, but the edition select makes up for that with the ability to play any version of Minecraft that you wish, also the PC community has a lot of mods, meaning that the experience will always be fresh and exciting.

On the surface the game doesn't seem to offer much, you are placed in a randomly generated world made of cubes. It looks bland, but once you put in the hours and finally work your way up to mining that first diamond; that is you realising that the game is actually rather fun. But how much work must you put in to get that diamond, considering you start with nothing... well to put it simply, it depends.

What does this depend on? The answer... the world generation, once you get mining, if you are lucky, you may have all the resources you need in a nice and close area, those of you who don't, well as annoying as that may sound, it's actually much more fun than finding it all in one area, considering once you have diamond weapons (unmodded gameplay) you are carrying the most powerful tools in the game. Yet... there is still work to be done.

If you are looking for story here, then you are better off looking elsewhere, Minecraft doesn't have a predefined story, however, with a bit of imagination, the story revolves around your character, what you do forms your story, there is an 'end' but that is harder to get to than getting the diamond tools... and we shall not be covering that.

So far, Minecraft sounds great, right?

There is so much that I could say that is positive about this game, but with every review, there has to be some negatives.

Minecraft isn't a game where you can easily play a game with friends and only friends, you are 'presented' with a choice, either mess with your router and port forward, which could lower your internet security if done wrong, or buy a server from a website which could turn out to be a scam. Minecraft does help a little bit with the latter option, with realms, but the prices are a little too high for my taste.

Once you have done everything you get a little bit bored, you may have the thrill of getting that nice full suit of diamond armour, and equipping yourself with that diamond sword, but to be blunt, by the time you get there, you're bored, and at that point, it's time to fetch some mods to see if they help you fight that boredom.

All in all, I'd suggest that those of you looking for a new game to play certainly give Minecraft a try, even if you don't like sandbox games.
