Unturned - the F2P zombie survival PvP game
Unturned. Many of you might have heard this games name before. It is a free to play survival game available on Steam. Unturned is actually a quite popular game. Even Pewdiepie has made a video about it . The video shows the game in its beta version. He mentions that it is very similar to DayZ and Minecraft.
It is indeed very similar. It has zombies and cars and planes and guns and building and much more. The game has a lot to offer, especially for a free to play one. Also taking into consideration that Unturned is made by a single developer, Nelson Sexton.
When the game was first released, it was quite messy, to be honest. In the second version of the game surviving was quite hard as the map was tiny, food was almost limited, and zombies respawned quite often. It felt like a true survival game which you could enjoy with your friends and never get bored of.
When Unturned 3.0 was released, many changes were made to gameplay and meta has changed a lot. It really has gone the way players have wanted the game to be.
In my opinion, the new version and new changes have been very bad for the whole "survivalist" experience. It takes a lot more time to starve or die of thirst and building your base is illogically easy. Previously only some knew how to build a good bunker, now every new player can do it in a couple of minutes.
Guns have become quite common, bullets do more damage. With just one trip to the military base you can easily come back with 3 assault rifles and ammo for days.
The meta has changed drastically over the years aswell. It used to be a "friendly" game, where you make allies and play together, but now... almost everyone you see will eventually gun you down, or try to atleast.
Basically everyone can find a helicopter or a tank and enjoy life. It does not seem like a novelty vehicle to have.
Also raiding bases has become a lot more difficult. Previously you could chainsaw yourself through a wall, now you have to use a C4 explosive to break a wooden structure. Come on, that is too ridiculous. I get it that it is for balancing, but still, what a joke.
This new meta and game changes have led to the a big part of the player base quitting the game.
Unturned 3 has been left quite abandoned compared to what it used to be.
But. Unturned 4 is on its way and has been in development for almost 2 years now. It looks very promising and Nelson has put a lot of time and effort into it. The graphics look very good compared to the current version and the new features seem very awesome.
My only concern is... will the meta change back to more of a survival game?
Hopefully Nelson listens to the majority of the player base and makes changes accordingly to the game, because to be honest, Unturned 3 has become too repetitive.
In conclusion Unturned is an average game with an average idea, which has had its ups and downs, but for a free to play one, I would say it is very good. Also I think the solo developer is working very hard, so no hard feelings to him.
